Turkish Food

Turkish food is essentially the remaining heritage of Ottoman cuisine, and is typically characterised by its combination of Asian, Balkan and Mediterranean cuisines.

Key ingredients in Turkish food include meat, peppers, onions, garlic, tomatoes and eggplants, with a consistent use of nuts in most Turkish recipes including almonds, chestnuts, hazelnuts, walnuts and pistachios.

Fruit is often used as a side dish to accompany meat and main meals, with a particular emphasis on plums, apples, figs and grapes. Yoghurt is also a particularly heavily used ingredient in Turkey, used to accompany both meat and vegetable dishes, as well as eating with rice or bread or being used in combination with fruit.

Both poultry and fish dishes are particularly popular in Turkey, with chicken, eggs, sardines and anchovies being among the most widely used.

Pork is generally not consumed in Turkish foods, due in the main to the fact that Turkey is a predominantly Islamic country.

The most famous Turkish exports in the UK include Turkish delight, which is widely available, and kebabs, which can be purchased from numerous different outlets in any major city in the UK.
