French Food

French food is known around the world for its high quality ingredients and preparation methods; seeing an abundance in popularity all over the globe. French recipes are steeped in the history of the country, with both peasant cuisine and the recipes and ingredients of the rich bourgeois surviving the generations.

French food varies distinctly according to the time of year; with salads and fruit dishes being particularly abundant during the summer, game and meat being most prominent during the winter months and shellfish, crayfish and oysters being enjoyed in the spring.

French recipes commonly contain produce grown or found locally, including vegetables, fungi and fruit. The most common ingredients of this nature include potatoes, green beans, carrots, turnips, shallots, truffles, mushrooms, oranges, peaches, apples, pears, plums, strawberries, raspberries, grapes and grapefruit.

Meat and game is particularly popular in French foods, with chicken, turkey, duck, goose, beef, pork, lamb, rabbit, horse, veal, frog and snails all being used in abundance. Seafood is also extremely popular in France, with sardines, tuna, cod, mussels, oysters, shrimp and salmon being the most commonly used.

Eggs are also extremely common in French recipes, being used for both savoury and sweet dishes. Herbs and seasonings are also extremely popular throughout France, with tarragon, rosemary, lavender, thyme and sage being the most commonly used.

In the UK, French food is often associated with bread and cheese, two particularly popular ingredients in French recipes. French bread, usually in the form of a long, crusty baton, is extremely popular both in the United Kingdom and internationally.
